Between 1870 and 1878, water diverted from these falls powered a felt mill owned by Mr. Huyck, one of the first in the papermaking industry to implement a continuous process. Following the destruction of the mill by flood in 1878, the land was converted into a nature preverve in 1930; it has remained relatively untouched since.
